Choosing a new furnace could be one of the more complicated decisions you face as a homeowner. Buying new HVAC equipment is a major investment in your long-term comfort and budget. While the equipment itself is fairly complex, the guidelines to make an informed purchase are straightforward.
- Select the fuel. The best options for home heating in this region include gas furnaces and heat pumps. If you’re replacing a gas heating system, using this fuel source for the new system would be the simplest option. However, if your cooling system needs upgrading at the same time, a heat pump will provide energy-efficient heating and cooling from one appliance.
- Find the proper size. To get the most comfort, durability and energy efficiency from the new system, insist that your HVAC contractor conduct a heating load calculation for your home. The calculation involves detailed information about your home’s overall energy efficiency, its layout and cubic footage, family size and personal preferences.
A system that’s too large will lower comfort, increase energy bills and may require more frequent repairs. One that’s too small may not be able to handle unusually cold weather.
- Look at efficiency ratings. A gas heating system must have an AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of 80, while a heat pump must have an HSPF (heating season performance factor) of 8.2. Higher ratings for both types of heating systems provide lower heating costs, as do Energy Star HVAC products.
- Consider upgraded features. Upgrades increase the efficiency ratings and your comfort. A variable-speed air handler for either heat pumps or gas furnaces increase comfort, reduce noise and lower ongoing energy costs. Heat pumps with scroll compressors put out more heat and have higher HPSF ratings. Two-stage gas furnaces run at a low and high speed, based on the need for heat. Most of the time, the system will run on low, which provides better heat distribution and saves energy.
